Corporate Social Responsibility

Downtown Duty Free believes in giving back, especially to the most vulnerable in our society, but we also believe that education is the key to breaking the cycle of poverty. It is for this reason that we will support two charities.

Responsibility:

Mangaliso Children’s’ Fund

The Mangaliso Children’s Fund was created to assist vulnerable and destitute foster mothers and foster children in their care. Downtown currently support Phumeza Ngqondela and her 6 children in Phoenix, Milnerton. The support includes finding and negotiating lease for a home in Phoenix, supporting with rental payments, food, stationery, outings. Legal advice, negotiating with the better schools for places, assisting with medical and transport but we are also assisting with establishing Phumeza’s catering business to make the household more sustainable.

Baby I

Tony’s (Part founder of Downtown Duty Free) wife, through SALT which she heads up, rescued a baby boy in Du Noon last year, whose Mom had died and at 4 months old only weighed 2.5 kg. After many hours in Red Cross Emergency and ICU, where he had to be resuscitated on at least one occasion, and after many weeks in hospital, the baby was released into Tony & Pauline’s care. The little boy is now 21 months old and has been fostered by a beautiful family, he has an older brother and two older sisters. He is as bright as a button and has no sign of any long term damage or illness.

SALT

SALT believes that everybody should have equal opportunities and have their human rights met. SALT’s response to the challenges at hand is to provide opportunities for people to restore their dignity, establish food security, and have access to quality education. Our team is focused and resolute people who are ruthless about positively impacting the communities we work in.
